In the heart of Barangay Cambatong is the dawn of one of the most magnificent and enchanting bodies of water in the Philippines. A lot of people have been captivated of its wonders and would endure the long travel just to go there, knowing that at the end of their trip lies in one of the great creations of nature. And we are one of the lucky ones who have managed to witness the enchanting charm the Hinatuan River has. And true to its name, the Enchanted River looks fascinating with its majestic blue water. But a lot has wondered why it is called enchanted.
Enchanted River is found in Barangay Talisay, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. It is called “enchanted” because no one has ever reached its bottom. Many people, including scuba divers, have tried reaching for the bottom but have failed; hence it is known for its legend as the bottomless pit. Additionally, locals share that nobody has been successful in catching the fish in this river, whether it is by hand or by spear.
Upon our visit there’s a local saying that goes, that during the night, fairies, and mermaids gather together to play and sing around the pure bluish water of a river in the town of Hinatuan. And every time the fairies touch the water, it becomes clearer and clearer. Aside from that, a lot of urban stories have been anchored in this river. It has been foretold that spirits guard the river that is why swimming beyond six in the afternoon is greatly discouraged. There were also reported sightings of two women sporting long blonde hair and a green-skinned man who walked on the water’s surface who all vanished out of thin air.
The caretaker and lifeguard Felecisimo Baguasan at the Enchanted River is the one responsible for feeding the fishes in the river. So when the clock hits noon while we are there, the Hinatuan. This is like an ancient ritual to the tourist spot; people who are swimming immediately paddle back to land while the fishes assemble near the riverbank, as if they have been trained.
